Reading the reportage about the Highway of the Nation on lemonde.fr, I sent an email to the writer and I had the good surprise to receive an answer 5 minutes later. Then, I asked a few questions to Marianne Rigaux about her adventure.
Can you present yourself in a few words?

I studied in Sciences-Po Lyon, then in at the journalist school of Lille. I lived in Romania during one year (2006-2007) and travel a lot in the region (Eastern Europe, Balkan and Turkey). I went to Iran and in the Caucasus too. I am freelance for lemonde.fr since the beginning of July, as multimedia journalist.
How did the reportage project about the Highway of the Nation begun?

The project began in July 2009 after reading an article about the highway in Le Monde Diplomatique. I immediately wanted to drive along! I kept the idea in mind during six months then I started to work on it around February. I read everything possible about the topic and then I contacted some people, who told me to contact other people. I wrote a synopsis and as one goes along, I presented the project to lemonde.fr in April. The subject entered perfectly in the theme for summer blogs 2010, which was “borders”.
What was the strongest moment of the reportage? And the most difficult moment?

What message do you wanted to send through this reportage?

I wasn’t looking for sending a message, just make people discover a region and its issues through the building of a highway. Like a guiding light to speak about people, what the think, what are their difficulties, recollections or hopes. And I wanted to show the complexity of a still painful History that we don’t know that much.
- Quels sont tes prochains projets ? What are your next projects?

Next projects: travel, again and again! Either for work or holidays, I would like to go to Iran and travel through central Asia and spend some time in South America. I have some reportage ideas in the long term, but nothing concrete at the moment.
